About the program:

Program dates: March 18-22, 2024
Program location: La Caldera studios, Barcelona, Spain

Applications open September 1, 2023 and are accepted on a rolling basis until spots are filled.

Dance HUB: Barcelona is an extraordinary dance intensive program that offers a transformative and culturally-immersive experience for dancers seeking a holistic and mindful approach to creative research.

At Dance HUB: Barcelona, creative research is at the heart of the program. Dancers are given the freedom to explore their ideas, experiment with movement, and collaborate with peers to create innovative choreographic scores. Integrating a more holistic approach, the focus goes beyond mere technical training and emphasis is placed on nurturing the whole dancer—mind, body, and spirit. Participants are encouraged to delve into self-reflection, mindfulness exercises, and somatic practices to deepen their awareness of their bodies, emotions, and intentions as they dance. The holistic approach not only enhances performance skills but also promotes overall well-being and personal growth.

Situated in Barcelona, a city pulsating with artistic energy and a rich cultural tapestry, Dance HUB offers a truly immersive experience. Participants have the opportunity to interact with local artists, immerse themselves in Catalan traditions and dance styles, and draw inspiration from the city's historical landmarks and artistic ambiance.

All WADE programs embrace diversity, welcoming dancers from various backgrounds, styles, and cultures. The convergence of different dance traditions and perspectives fosters a dynamic and inclusive community, creating a space where dancers can learn from one another, share experiences, and grow together as artists.

By the end of the program, participants emerge with a profound connection to their craft and renewed inspiration infused with the vibrant spirit of Barcelona.

Our approach

We believe in creating a safe environment for all participants while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. We do not believe in rote technique instruction but rather in a space for lifelong learning in which deep enquiry and critical reflection are supported. Both require down time from the studio.

We value studio time equally with community interaction, performance, and research opportunities, as well as experiencing local foods, traditions, and sites. Our programs will never exceed a six (6) hour work day (studio time + performance/preparation time + events + meetings) over five (5) days. Just like the “nine to five” outdated grind-mentality has been proven to be detrimental to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, excessive work in the studio has proven to make dancers less productive, more stressed, injured, burned out, and worst of all, less creative.

As an arts organization committed to justice and community, we explore and honor each city that hosts us. We concentrate on its natural resources, facilitate conversations, and create artistic works around the urgent need to preserve, heal, and love these townships.

We hold space with intention, honesty, transparency and an unwavering commitment to open communication. We hold and support each other.

About Giada Matteini’s Somatics and Embodied Ballet practice:

Giada’s process as an educator is anchored in service to others and international collaborations that allow artists to practice compassion and understanding towards each other and conflicting viewpoints. She has dedicated much time and research in debunking the idea of ballet as an elitist art form, instead nurturing the appreciation of the many shapes and sizes of the moving body in the ballet vocabulary, and of gender fluidity in the ballet studio. Giada has been fine-tuning her approach to ballet and taking the time in each class to challenge the value system that reinforces harmful body images. Unpacking ballet's cultural construction, continuously improving her teaching language, nationally and internationally, with diverse populations, abilities, backgrounds and intentions has been in support of the training of her students who might feel marginalized in the studio.

The residency in Barcelona will concentrate on the concept of embodiment as a convergence of the full human in the studio. Giada’s somatic work, which takes inspiration from many healing and conditioning modalities such as Bartenieff, Yoga, Pilates, Reiki, embodied physiology, meditation and mindful practices, will serve as a grounding exercise for the group to come together as a collective. The participants are invited to discover the complexities, mysteries, and intelligence of their own body as a point of entry into the ballet vocabulary. The one hour somatic work will be followed by an hour of center barre and center work. The space is meant to be fertile and open to questions, to journaling, to investigation and to reflection. Feel free to stand aside and write your thoughts or jut down an idea sparked by your own personal research in class.

The radical call of action for this class and the entire week long residency is to be fully present, trusting and joyous of one’s capability and fullness allowing for unhindered collaborations with other creatives and art forms.

About B>Lab’s creative process:

B>Lab is the original and central tool used in the BIDE laboratories of movement. The B>Lab's laboratories’ goal is to let creative ideas sprout and circulate in a basin of diversity and inclusion, through a process of non hierarchical cross-exploration. The B>Lab's laboratories trigger connections through which participants engage themselves in the research and share their discoveries in order to feed the collective creation. Each B>LAB has facilitators whose mission is to introduce the biannual theme, open questions and propose a dynamic structure for the working session, and provide a fertile field for participants to decide how to proceed.

  • The B>Labs have a variable duration of between 3 and 6 hours.

  • They are divided into three parts: an introduction by the facilitators to the biannual theme, collective development and a closing.

  • The introduction. Every two years BIDE provides a transversal topic. The task of the facilitators is to propose an approach to it.

  • Development. It is the magical part of the process that depending on the diversity of the participants and the dynamics between them, the creative sparks are appearing.

  • The closure. At the end of each session the participants present the conclusions of the collective work in the form of an open score, work in progress or oral, visual presentations, etc. of no more than 10 minutes.

About Lorena Nogal and the KOVA Method:

Lorena Nogal, born in Barcelona in 1984, has been part of the La Veronal artistic team for more than fourteen years as an assistant choreographer and dancer. In 2016 she was awarded as best female performer at the Catalonia Critics’ Awards and two years later she, with several colleagues, launched the Hotel Col.lectiu Escènic project.

Her latest creation Alegorías, el límite y sus mapas, created in collaboration with flamenco dancer Paula Comitre, was presented in February 2022 at the Chaillot Theatre in Paris. Lorena Nogal is also a teacher of the Kova method, the language of movement that she has developed in recent years in La Veronal.

KOVA technique: La Veronal proposes an approach to their particular body language, based on the development of a personal technique starting from different benchmarks to dissect movements, distort and pervert them as part of a whole in which theatricality and film references are also present, not forgetting a solid body base. Through composition exercises and adaptations of repertoire of the company it is intended to make a particular impression on each of the dancers and push them into new searches, being the movement provided by the company a new tool for the personal development of the interpreter.
